I do not fit the 'techno twit' description and have no answer to your question.

What I can tell you is that I had a CD that would not play in my stereo or boom box - but I was able to rip it and burn it to a new CD and the copy plays fine, the original still won't play.

I'll let NC answer your real question.

I use iTunes for that all the time, jglynn! It will read CDs that no other player of mine will read, and make an identical, lossless copy. This is why I prefer CDs to vinyl. If a record gets scratched, you can't just make another copy for the cost of a blank disc...

burn a set on cd in one file > rip to mp3 ... not second delays except for disk can, but that can be adjusted in the file rip.

The buffers in the boombox and car stereo were no match for the buffers in the CD rom you made the copy on. It was able to fix the errors for you so the other limited players could translate the data in time to keep it flowing.

I had a CD that skipped and made a copy, copy plays fine. Great trick to try first if you ever feel like tossing it out the window of your car like a frisbee.
